The domestic economy is also experiencing a craze for artificial intelligence (AI). Individual companies are increasing their productivity by introducing AI technology. Korea also has a leading edge in security technology that minimizes the side effects of AI and ensures safety.

◆ AI that increases manufacturing productivity

According to the industry on the 24th, POSCO is utilizing P-GPT, which combines its own information with the ChatGPT language model, early on. It provides customized services for business environments such as sustainable management GPT and fair trade GPT by learning not only general conversations but also internal documents. It also increased work efficiency by introducing Microsoft's Copilot.

Daesung Hi-Tech, a high-precision parts company in Daegu, was selected for the 'AI Autonomous Manufacturing Leading Project' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy last month and plans to build a flexible production system for various types of products. It plans to increase manufacturing productivity by more than 30% by developing AI-based manufacturing algorithms, securing data and standard work instructions for each unit process, building an unmanned integrated autonomous manufacturing line, and developing an integrated management and operation system for the autonomous manufacturing system.

EcoPro, the number one cathode material company, plans to analyze process data in real time using AI to prevent process errors in advance and automatically control equipment to secure the best quality.

Computermate, an ICT company located in Suwon Alpha City, is developing a general platform used for quality inspection of automobile parts. It aims to minimize errors in the process of judging defective products by applying camera AI technology. It aims to develop a model specialized for the field through system advancement and implement a quality improvement system through history management.

◆ Strengthening AI security technology

The current level of domestic AI is quite high in terms of ‘security.’ In terms of the number of AI security technology patent applications, Korea ranks third in the world, following the US and China.

According to the status of AI security technology patent applications at major patent offices in the past 10 years (2012-2021) announced by the Korean Intellectual Property Office on the 24th, the number of AI security technology patent applications in 2021 alone was 1,492, a 40.3-fold increase from 37 in 2012. The average annual growth rate is 51%.

Korea has been overtaking Japan since 2017 and is widening the gap every year. Looking at companies with multiple applications for AI security technology, Samsung Electronics is the only non-US company to make it into the top 10 (6th).

The remaining nine companies in the top ten are all American, including IBM, Strongforce, and Microsoft.

In particular, Korea was found to have an advantage in the user authentication field among AI-based hacking and detection technologies. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics also ranked 1st and 6th in the number of applications in the user authentication field, respectively.

It was found that AI security technology applications worldwide are led by companies (78.5%). On the other hand, in Korea, AI security technology applications were relatively high, with companies accounting for 68%, while universities and public institutions accounted for 26%.

AI security technology is expected to be utilized more in the AI ​​era, including ▷ cyber threat detection and prevention, ▷ security operation automation, and ▷ user authentication and access control, so global big tech companies are taking preemptive measures. The scope of AI technology application is expanding beyond IT to healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, making security enhancement essential.
